Friend of Africa-Hall of Fame

Mary Anne Chambers, Jamaica- FOA 2013 (Inducted 2015)

Mary Anne Chambers emerged the Friend of Africa-2013 and was inducted into the FOA Hall of Fame on the 3rd October at the 2015 Economic Development Conference by Casa Foundation in Canada. As of 2011, Mary- Anne had personally funded the education of more than 30 students attending Ontario universities and colleges by awarding scholarships to them. She also continues to sponsor early childhood institutions in Jamaica, the country of her birth.

Jim Karygiannis- Canada (Inducted 2015)
Jim Karygiannis is an industrial engineer with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Fellow of the Canadian School of Management. Currently a Federal Member of the Canadian Parliament, Karygiannis has been engaged with community development in the African community since the early 80’s, first as a politician at provincial level then as a federal MP. Jim was inducted into the FOA Hall of Fame in 2015 at FOA 2015.

Lucien Bradet, Canada - FOA 2012
Lucien Bradet emerged the Friend of Africa, 2012. He is the President of the Canadian Council on Africa and the former Director General of Industry Canada. He completed his university studies in Sociology and Anthropology at the Université nationale du Rwanda, established in the 1960s with the assistance of the Canadian government and has since promoted developmental initiatives in various regions of Africa by facilitating investments opportunities for canadian companies.

Betty Makoni- Zimbabwe

Betty Makoni is the Founding Executive Director of Girl Child Network Zimbabwe and Chief Executive Officer of Girl Child Network World Wide, an organization that champions the rights of the girl child in Zimbabwe, Uganda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, USA, United Kingdom. She holds two Bachelor of Arts Honors degrees from the University of Zimbabwe. Betty was inducted into the FOA Hall of Fame in 2013.

Laura E. Stachel, USA-FOA 2014
Laura E Stachel, Medical doctor with practice in Sanfransisco M.D, M.P.H. the co-founder and executive director of WE CARE Solar. Her work at We Care Solar brings life-saving “solar suitcases” to hospitals and clinics in developing countries. Since 2009, more than 400 “solar suitcases” have served mothers and babies in over 20 countries.

Derreck Kayongo- Uganda
Derreck and his Atlanta-based Global Soap Project have changed lives by collecting used hotel soaps from across the United States and reprocessing for shipment to Haiti, Uganda, Kenya and Swaziland. Kayongo transitioned from a refugee to become a college graduate in the US and a Coordinator for CARE International, a private humanitarian aid organization. But he has not forgotten his roots and cares for refugees who lack access to basic sanitation.

Chris Ekong- Nigeria
Chris Ekong is a neurosurgeon and heads the division of Neurosurgery in the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. He is also a clinical Professor of surgery (neurosurgery) at the University of Saskatchewan. He organizes free medical clinics in various parts of Africa. His Purple Computer Project, established in 2010, raises money to donate 100,000 computers to community centres in developing countries such as India, China, Nigeria, Ghana and so on.
